Newark, Ohio (AP) -- The Longaberger Basket Company is laying off 125 of its manufacturing employees and turning control of a shipping center over to another company.
The Newark, Ohio-based Longaberger Co. said Monday that the 100 people who work at the order fulfillment center in Frazeysburg in eastern Ohio will need to reapply for their jobs under the facility's new management.
The reduction in manufacturing jobs is typical for Longaberger at this time of year, in anticipation of slower business after the holidays.
The company said in a statement that sales met expectations during the final months of 2009.
Spokesman Tom Matthews says the cuts will leave Longaberger with about 1,300 employees, down from roughly 2,000 last January.
