The Interstate 77 Welcome Center near Williamstown is now open for business.

Governor Wise and other state officials gathered to officially open the $4.8 million Wood County center Monday.

Wise says welcome centers are important because more than 90 percent of the people who travel to West Virginia do so by car. He says every day, visitors drive to the Mountain State for vacations and business and need directions, information or help with reservations.

West Virginia sees more than 20 million visitors each year.

The welcome center, a 74 by 141-foot building with a cut-stone exterior, sits on a seven-and-a-half-acre site. It features an octagonal display area promoting the artistry of state glassblowers and a theater area for movies on state tourism destinations.

The center is located just south of Exit 185 at the junction of state routes 14 and 31.
