Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- An Elkview woman convicted of entering a hospital intensive-care unit and fatally shooting her estranged husband has been sentenced to life in prison.

Kanawha County circuit judge Todd Kaufman sentenced Rhonda Stewart on Tuesday to life with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

A jury found Stewart guilty in December of first-degree murder in the shooting death of her 56-year-old husband Sammy Stewart.

Her attorney claimed she went to CAMC Memorial Hospital's intensive-care unit last June to take her own life.

Instead, she shot her husband in the head.

Why was she going to shoot her self...is she the reason he was in icu? Even if there was security there probably isn't any metal detecters. She probably looked like any unset wife and walked right by security.

I didn't even know that hospitals had security until I read a while back that one of them was robbed in the parking lot. I have never seen one! Would have been nice to know that when I have had to leave the ER at 3AM and walk to my car alone. Hospitals have always freaked me out with all the weirdos coming in and out all night in "pain" looking for their opiate fix. And I agree w/Roger. WV needs the death penalty again.

W.Va. needs the death penalty reinstated. It should have already been done and she should be executed within 30 days of conviction.

Hospitals should have better secutiry! I don't understand, did the police not know that the husband and wife were not on good terms?
