Fenton Art Glass Says It's Closing

WTAP-TV has received a press release from Williamstown-based Fenton Art Glass Company.

The press release says the 105-year old glass-making company will "cease its operations over the next few months."

“This decision was difficult,” company President George W. Fenton said. “Since the announcement in June regarding our efforts toward financial restructuring, we took many steps to try to continue the company’s operations and the tradition of glassmaking. Ultimately, those efforts were not successful.”

George Fenton says the company met with employees today. Approximately 25 of the 150 current employees will be let go immediately. Others will be let go in the coming weeks.

We'll have more on this story coming up on FOX Parkersburg News at Ten, WTAP News at Eleven and here on our web channel, wtap.com.

I have been a fan of your beautiful glassware...I am sorry to see it end...I have collected a few of your pieces, they will be handed down as Amrican...glassware collector pieces. You have done yourself proud over the years. Sincerely, Maria Shore

My heart was saddened and mournful when I heard this news. I have been collecting lovely Fenton glass for the past 31 years, a tradition started for me by my brother, Gare. I, too, feel like there has been a death in the family and will hold my collection even dearer than ever. Fenton art glass is true "Americana" and the Fenton family simply the best. This is the end of an era. Let's keep the wonder and beauty of this true American product in our hearts, always. Thank you Fenton family.

I have been a fan of Fenton for years. It was one of the few things sstill around from when I was a child. I wish thre was some way to bail them out either through goverment or a fund raiser. It would be ashame to see one of the last family American owned buisnesses dissappear.

I've been an avid Fenton Art Glass collector for 30 years, and the company's closing feels like a death in the family. The Fenton family has not only treated their employees like family members, they've embraced collectors and anyone with a passion for Art Glass in the same way. It seems like only yesterday Fenton was holding their spectacular centennial celebration in Williamstown. How sad to see it come to an end.

I was very fortunate to meet Frank several times. He would be heartbroken today if he were still with us. I collect Old CXarnival and Frank would never hesitate to take a call with a question. It's a shame that WV did not step up to the plate to assist in saving this family business. I used to think that as long as Fenton was in business, American Craftmanship would be alive and well, apparently it passed today.
