Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Once again Wal-Mart is the number 1 private employer in the state.
The Bentonville, Arkansas,-based retailer employs 12,734 West Virginians and has held the top spot since at least 1999.
Coming in second on Workforce West Virginia's annual list was West Virginia University Hospitals with 7,566 employees.
Charleston Area Medical Center came in third with 4,745 employees.
Rounding out the top five were Kroger with about 3,200, and American Electric Power with 2,847.
Workforce West Virginia says the top 10 businesses in the state hired more than 1,400 new employees in the past year, an increase of about 3.4 percent. The state average is 0.3 percent.
On the county level, Workforce West Virginia says boards of education are the largest employers in 35 of the state's 55 counties unlike the state list, the county lists include government agencies.
