A Barking Dog Saves Woman From House Fire

A woman wakes up to her dog barking finding her home filled with smoke and fire and no way to get out.

It happened early Sunday morning. Parkersburg firefighters rescued the woman with a ladder just in time.

Parkersburg Fire Chief Eric Taylor says it happened on Juliana Street around 6:30 am.

A woman inside the home woke up to her dog barking and finding her house completely filled with smoke and flames.

Chief Taylor says there were no smoke detectors in the house.

He says she was trapped in a second floor bedroom.

Firefighters responded finding the back of the house engulfed with fire and heavy smoke.

They used a ladder to rescue her from the second story.

She was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Chief Taylor says they don't often use ladder rescues, but there were no other options for them to save her.

"There's no doubt in my mind that had the animal not alerted her the circumstances might be a little different this afternoon."

Damage to the home is estimated around 100 thousand dollars.

The dog that saved her life didn't make it out alive.

A house next door also had damage to the vinyl siding and windows from the heat.

Fire investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
