Trees can add to the beauty of any city.

But they also have some important jobs to do.

The West Virginia Division of Forestry says trees reduce run-off and keep us cool in the summer.

And Friday morning community members gathered to celebrate the role of trees in Parkersburg.

But trees can cause problems as well.

Falling branches can block roads, cause accidents and take down power lines.

Overgrown roots lift sidewalks and sometimes need to be moved.

"The tree commission takes care of that, it makes the city safer for residents and also more enjoyable for our residents, because trees provide quality of life," says Andy Sheetz, with the West Virginia Division of Forestry.

The City of Parkersburg cares for more than 1,000 trees on public land.

But Sheetz says homeowners can help out by keeping an eye on the trees in their own backyard.
