ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - A 76-year-old southeastern Ohio man has been sentenced to five years in prison for molesting a 3-year-old girl at a day care center operated by his daughter.

An Athens County jury last month found Thomas Shifflet guilty of gross sexual imposition in the fondling assault of the 3-year-old, but couldn't reach verdicts on counts of gross sexual imposition involving two other girls.

In a crowded courtroom in Athens on Wednesday, he agreed to enter pleas to resolve the remaining charges. He entered Alford pleas, which means he didn't admit guilt but agreed there was enough evidence to find him guilty.

The parents of three of his alleged victims had angry words for Shifflet and his wife, who had maintained his innocence.

The assaults occurred in 2010 and 2011.

An Athens County man charged with having sexual contact with young girls pleads not guilty to additional charges. He's accused of committing the crime at relatives daycare centers in July.

Thomas Shifflet faces one count of rape, three counts of gross sexual imposition, and one count of sexual imposition.

An Athens County judge continued his previously posted signature bond of 500 thousand dollars.

Shifflet is to have no contact with any day care center, no contact with minors without their parents consent, and no contact with the families involved in the case.

Officials say multiple families reported Shifflet had sexual contact with girls ages three to five at two day care centers in the county. They say he's the father of the owners of those two day care centers.

Officials say multiple families reported that Thomas Shifflet of Glouster had sexual contact with girls ages 3 to 5 at two day care centers in the county.

Shifflet was arrested on Tuesday, after an Athens County grand jury indicted him.

He entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment Wednesday.

A judge has set Shifflet's bond at $2,000,000.

The Athens County prosecutor says the crime Shifflet's accused of happened in late June.

All of these prayers and wishes for his death would be far better suited to following strict procedures. No adult should be left alone with a child or children. Strength in numbers..of staff and kids, and constant watch over the numbers of children and staff can save children from this tragedy. The simple fact is crimes like this dont usually happen by a strangers violation, but a trusted adults perverted supervision. Don't be paranoid but know your kids and if your a childcare provider, follow procedures to the letter.

just seems that if we can't trust the world why do we keep populating the place? we certainly aren't teaching the new generations any better. being alone with a kid is not the issue.

Don't you think he deserve a day in court to defend against these charges BEFORE you lynch him? Whatever happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty?

Sad...very sad, my prayers are with the families and those poor little children! I have a 7 year old daughter, and I just could not imagine this happening to her! He will get what he deserves, it will not be now, it will not be while he lives on this earth, it will be after he dies, when he is judged, and thrown into the fiery pits of hell! Then, an only then will he get what he deserves! Children are Gods blessings to the world and only a monster would harm one! There is no place for monsters in Heaven!

I can go on and say all the bad things about this man but that's mute at this point. My concern would be for ALL the children in those childcare centers! His children that run them need punished as well! Does no one do background checks before leaving their children with people anymore?? Or at least ask around!!

Yes, God will be his judge but lets prep him for delivery to god by castrating this old dog if he is found guilty.

Prayers to these precious little child victims. If in fact this man is guilty he should be tried to the fullest extent of the law. This makes me sick!!!

People like this deserve prison and forced castration. The victims and their deserve our prayers and I hope they get all the help they need to get through this.

As hildcare provider for 45 years, this is the type of thing that breaks my heart. I hope it will serve as a warning to teachers and parents alike that we owe it to all children to remain vigilent. Shame on you and may you have enough years left to really realize what you hav cost these babies.
