A childhood game takes a scary turn
An young girl finds herself running from a stranger in Beverly. "Her and another girl were playing hide and seek in that area," says Beverly Police Chief Mark Sams.

The Beverly Police say it happened around 5:30 Thursday evening behind Fort Frye High School. An eleven year old girl says a stranger, holding a gun, tried to grab her.

"The gentleman approached her, she got scared and ran back toward the school. He grabbed her by the hooded sweatshirt she was wearing and forced her back toward the river area, she was then able to break free from him and run back up to the school." There she found someone at the school who called the Police.

She tells police he was talking to her-- but she didn't even know what he was saying. "He made some comments but she wasn't really sure what he was saying, it was kind of a mumble.

Police say this type of situation, while rare, does happen. They say parents should talk about a safe place to go in every situation. "I think parents should bring it up to children a head of time and discuss what could happen or if they feel uncomfortable in a situation, they need to get out of it and go to that safe house."

Police say this man was carrying what appeared to be a long gun.

The girl described the man as mid-twenties, about five-ten, and a short beard but no mustache. The man was last seen wearing camouflage clothing and a hunter orange/camo hat. Do have a lead but are still asking anyone with any information to call the Sheriff's Office at 740-376-7070 ext. 0.
