Belpre High School is on lockdown this morning as a result of a comment posted on social media by a Parkersburg South High School student.

Larry Lorentz, director of instruction for Belpre City Schools, says there was allegedly a threat posted by a Parkersburg South High School student on social media and it allegedly mentioned Belpre High School.

Lorentz says as a precaution, Belpre High School was placed on lockdown this morning and police are walking the campus to ensure everything is secure.

According to Sgt. Greg Collins with the Parkersburg Police Department, officials did investigate a potential threat to Parkersburg South High School on Monday.

Sgt. Collins says messages were posted on social media sites naming a PSHS student who classmates believed may pose a threat.

Parents of PSHS students began contacting school officials and the police.

Sgt. Collins says the high school staff and Parkersburg Police Department worked immediately to see if there was any credibility to the threat, and determined there was not. Sgt. Collins says the posts were nothing but rumors that were blown out of proportion.

Sgt. Collins says both the staff and police made sure to speak with the students involved and assure that the high school is safe.

The student involved was determined not to be a threat and no criminal charges will be filed.

The Parkersburg Police Department will continue to monitor the situation at the school and continue make sure all schools are safe for students.

Totally unrelated to the Parkersburg South investigation is a concern in Pleasants county. Superintendent, Michael Wells, released this statement.

"There were reported allegations of a potential threat at Pleasants County Middle School which the Board takes seriously. Law enforcement (Pleasants County Sheriff's Dept.) has been notified and are working with school officials and investigating the allegations to ensure continued student and staff safety, which has always been a top priority in Pleasants County Schools."
