They were there with their lawn chairs on a warm summer night to celebrate a big birthday, West Virginia's 150th.

It was a sea of people at City Park in front of the pavilion; all ready for some music, festivities and cake with the mayor on the sesquicentennial. They were beaming with pride and many wore blue and gold.

"150th birthday of the great state of West Virginia and for Parkersburg,” says Mayor Bob Newell. “We've mentioned many times that Parkersburg's where West Virginia really began. The first two elected governors are from here, the first U.S. congressman, first U.S. senator -- the Constitution was written here, so it has significant meaning.”

Newell says West Virginia is the only state in the union created by executive order under President Lincoln.
