They are first on scene, saving lives everyday and helping those in traumatic situations.

But how do they deal with it?

Officials across the Mid-Ohio Valley are spending Wednesday and Thursday learning how to deal with accumulated stress on their own lives when they help those in need.

A member of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is leading the seminar on critical incident stress de-briefing

"The people here have volunteered to help their co-workers, their friends their community members following a traumatic incident or critical incident," says Dr. Kenneth Middleton. "So it's important for them to be trained in what kinds of things they can say or do to help others and the kinds of things they shouldn't say or do."

Dr. Middleton says they need to minimize that stress and take care of themselves.

That helps responders live longer and healthier lives.
