Cleaning a gun is an important part of firearms safety.

But make sure the cleaning process itself is safe.

Local NRA licensed instructor Shawn Lorentz says not to assume a weapon is unloaded before cleaning it.

He says to always check the magazine to make sure there aren't any bullets inside.

He adds accidents involving gun cleaning are all too common.

"People should be focused while cleaning their firearm. Other people around them are distractions, or think it's not loaded, and they start taking it apart, and there's a bullet inside, and the firing pin can go off," he says.

Lorentz adds it's also important to take the firearm to a safe location free of distractions.

Sometimes, people who think a gun isn't loaded when it's being cleaned may not have realized someone else might have used it before they did.
