One local nurse is using his skills to care for people here at home and soon, halfway across the world.

27-year-old Zach Greathouse of Palestine is traveling with the Peace Corps to Malawi, Africa.

The WVU and Wheeling Jesuit alum will teach at a local university.

His role as a nursing education specialist comes as the poverty-stricken country is plagued with malaria and aids.

He was inspired by a friend who worked with the Peace Corps in Kenya.

Greathouse says it's his job to help wherever someone is in need.

"I really enjoy learning about other cultures and meeting new people, being accepted into their groups and just experiencing new food, new sights and then helping people and working in areas that have a lot less resources than we have here," he says.

Zach's journey begins next Saturday with two weeks of training in Washington, D.C.

Once in Africa he'll work in Malawi for the next year, returning home briefly in the fall.

He says he'll miss having easy access to Amazon.
