Long time Parkersburg South basketball coach Larry Edwards has died from complications to due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis., also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Edwards was part of the teaching and coaching community for nearly half a century
He was an assistant basketball coach under the legendary Sam Mandich at Parkersburg High School. He also helped coach the Big Reds baseball team to a state championship in 1970.
Edwards had a coaching stint in Weirton before returning to Parkersburg and beginning his long relationship at Parkersburg South.
Edwards was a fixture in Parkersburg South basketball.
He first served as the boys head varsity coach. Following that he served as an assistant coach on the Patriots girls basketball team since the mid 1990's.
There was no ego. Larry worked with head coaches Steve Wiseman and then Scott Stephens, sharing his insights with the coaches, while serving as an instructor, mentor, and bolsterer for his players.
Edwards also served his community as a long time volunteer with the Mid Ohio Valley Red Cross.
This past March, he completed his final assignment of his long and successful career, helping guide Parkersburg South to the West Virginia Class AAA girls basketball championship.
