The Marietta Fire Department participated Friday in hazmat training.

This week was the department's annual refresher for handling hazardous materials.

The group started the day in the classroom and by the afternoon, they were getting their hands dirty.

The training course uses different models and puzzles to help firefighters break down the situation and communicate efficiently.

"One of the things with hazardous material response we are fortunate that the frequency isn't there, but the risk is very high or potentially can be high, so the training, it's a key issue to keep it sharp so they can function in that situation," says Ed Burns, an instructor from Cleveland State University.

Burns says this is very important for the firefighters, especially the hands-on portion.

Law requires a minimum of eight hours of training per year.
