The statistics are sobering, highway construction work zone deaths doubled from 2009 to 2011.
More people are dying in these work zones than ever before due to car crashes.
This as the Ohio Department of Transportation is observing Work Zone Safety Awareness week from April 14th to the 21st.
"In today's society we're all in a hurry; we all need to get from point A to point B as fast as we can," says Dave Rose, public information officer for ODOT. "But when there are lives at risk from not paying attention we just really need to step up as motorists, everyone -- and just be aware when we go through these work zones and not be distracted."
Rose says the top causes for work zone crashes are speeding, following too closely and failure to control with improper lane changes.
This week ODOT is promoting what motorists can do to be safe.
