Ohio Marijuana Debate

Marijuana legalization is a highly debated topic across the nation.

In Colorado, as of January 1, it is officially legal.

In Ohio one representative introduced legislation to put the question of legalizing marijuana on the state ballot.

Officials we talked to are not in support of the idea.

They say legalizing marijuana is a bad idea on many levels.

They are watching Colorado closely to see how it all plays out.

In Ohio this is all coming from Democratic Representative Robert Hagan in Youngstown.

He is asking for House Joint Resolution 6, which asks voters to consider whether to allow people 21 years or older to purchase and consume marijuana.

This would mean retail sales of marijuana would be limited to state-licensed establishments and would be subject to a 15 percent excise tax.

However, officials say they have worked too hard to fight this gateway drug to now legalize it.

authorities say there is a lot to look into if this legislation does move forward.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says it is a gateway drug and if something like this were to happen it wouldn't be easy and it would actually make their job even harder.
