Ohio Governor John Kasich will fight his own party for extending Medicaid coverage under the federal health care law, more commonly called Obamacare.

Fellow Republicans in the house cut it from the state budget, with the House Speaker saying many Republicans would rather shoot themselves than expand Medicaid under Obamacare.

But Governor Kasich says he "profoundly" disagrees with them and couldn't have made his position more clear.

The GOP-led house unveiled its 2-year state budget Tuesday.

Rejecting expansion means Ohio would forgo $13 billion from the federal government over the next seven years to cover those newly eligible for medicaid.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The leader of the Ohio Senate says he could have chosen his words more carefully when arguing that the federal government has put the state in a difficult position as it decides whether to expand Medicaid.

Senate President Keith Faber said Monday it was "probably inartful" of him to liken the choice to the government loading a revolver, pointing it at states and saying "do this or else."

Faber, a Celina Republican, had described Medicaid expansion as an ultimatum to the Lima News in an article posted online Saturday.

Many Republicans are averse to President Barack Obama's health care law, of which Medicaid expansion is a key component.

Republican Gov. John Kasich supports expanding the federal-state program, saying it's a way to recapture Ohio taxpayers' federal money.
