COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A Republican U.S. senator who last month shook up the gay-marriage debate by announcing his support has been answering questions about his change while back home in Ohio.

Rob Portman says the economy and deficit are his top priorities as he prepares to return to Washington, but that same-sex marriage has come up repeatedly during his Ohio travels the last two weeks.

He tells WBNS-TV in Columbus that some people are concerned that churches could have to perform same-sex marriages. Portman says the issue isn't about telling churches what to do, but about letting individuals make their own choices.

Portman acknowledges that his shift came after his son Will told his parents he is gay. But Portman says studying the issue convinced him gay marriage has benefits, including stability.
