Ohio's unemployment rate is now higher than the national rate.

The Department of Job and Family Services says the unemployment rate hit 7.5 percent in October, that's the highest it's been since March of last year.

Officials in Washington County blame plant closures for the recent spike in unemployment figures.

"We had a plant closure, Ormet, which really hurt us pretty bad," says Candy Nelson. "Not as bad as like Monroe County and some of West Virginia, but we had quite a few people from that area in Washington County working up there."

On a brighter note, Nelson adds that the department is optimistic the potential Wood County cracker plant project will put a lot of those jobs back into the Mid-Ohio Valley and curb recent trends.
