UPDATE 9/30/2013 12:15 PM
Parkersburg, Parkersburg South and Williamstown High Schools have had police officers in their buildings for years.
Now, three more schools will get "pro" officers.
It's the result of a federal grant of more than $340,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice to the City of Parkersburg.
It means prevention officers will soon be on duty at the city's three middle schools - Hamilton, Edison and Van Devender.
"Parkersburg was one of only two cities to be awarded these COPS grants. They received three officers as a result," says U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin. "The other one was Huntington, who received five. So they were really the only two in the state to receive this grant."
The grant adds three officers to the Parkersburg Police force.
Police Chief Joe Martin says it may take some time for the new officers to be trained, but he expects them to be posted at the schools during the current school year.
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Parkersburg is getting a grant to fund new school resource officer positions.
Rep. David McKinley said the $343,940 grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The funding will allow three officers to be hired.
McKinley says the officers will help students feel more secure, give parents peace of mind and provide additional resources for crime prevention.
The Justice Department program offers grants to state and local law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire officers. The program provides the salary and benefits for officer and deputy hires for three years.
