Parkersburg city council met for the first time since the new year and set the groundwork for a busy year.

One of the first orders of business was the selection of a new council president.

Councilman Jim Reed was voted in unanimously in the first round.

John Rockhold was voted in as Vice President.

Personnel Direct Pam Savage, Development Director Ann Conageski and City Attorney Joseph Santer were all proposed and approved.

Mayor Bob Newell also delivered his state of the city address, outlining his plans for the coming year.

"In the last four years, this administration and the City Council has had to make some very difficult decisions. We had to correct the failings of others that refused to make these tough decisions," claimed Newell. "A lot was said by the vocal (minority) however, everyone on city council who voted for the necessary measures were re-elected."

Mayor Newell also outlined several city projects for this year including expanding the bike path connector, creating more riverfront walk and improving the appearance and businesses along Seventh Street.
