One local fire department is urging you to keep you house safe from going up in flames.

Vienna Fire Chief, Steve Scholl, advises you to make sure your electrical cords are in good condition, maintain a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector and keep flammable items such as matches and candles out of the reach of your kids.

West Virginia State Law requires homeowners to have a smoke detector on every floor of their house.

"You need to plan a safe way to get out, a meeting place for everybody to get out that way you can meet at the same place and your parents and adults in the house can take roll call to make sure everybody's out and safe," says Scholl.
