Volunteers are at the core of what they do to prevent and help alleviate suffering in the face of catastrophic emergencies.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross celebrates them during National Volunteer Week.

From house fires to teaching lifesaving skills to supporting military members in the community, volunteers are part of the Red Cross' mission every day.

Executive Director Sharon Callow says they're incredibly grateful to them all the time.

"Since we're a non-profit organization and we rely on volunteers, we could not provide the services we do; mainly it's in disaster services," she says. "We have nearly a hundred just in our county and what they do is go out 24/7."

Callow says the volunteers provide immediate help, such as health needs, rent, lodging, food, clothing, medical assistance, a warm blanket and a hug.

Frank Dotson has been volunteering for the Red Cross for 21 years and says it's very rewarding.

When he retired he wanted to give back to the community and this was his opportunity.

“I guess when it comes to volunteering, you kind of get it in your blood and it's like the same thing as people who work -- you know, do volunteer fireman,” he says.

Just this Monday morning, Dotson worked mass care, where he delivered comfort kits, including cots and blankets.

He took them to various shelters in several counties, so the shelters can stay open and equipped.
