Their motto is "Doing the Most Good," and this year The Salvation Army is asking for your help to do good right here in Parkersburg.
It's the sound of bells and it means Christmas is right around the corner.
Bell ringing volunteers from The Salvation Army in Parkersburg are out in full force. You can find them at various grocery stores and shopping plazas around the area.
This year, under new direction, The Salvation Army is hoping to beat their goals from last years donations.
"Last year at this time during the same opening weekend, we raised five thousand six hundred dollars and we're hoping this year we can raise six thousand. So come out and see us today somewhere by a kettle. It's a great day to give back to the community. When you give money today, you can expect change in your community," says Corps Officer, Lt. Erik Henry.
It's a tradition for The Salvation Army and the people who donate and this year many families need the help more than ever. "It's a great tradition The Salvation Army has of giving at Christmas time to be able to help those that are in need, and face it, in today's society we have a lot of people that struggle from paycheck to paycheck to be able to provide for their family. During the Christmas season this is where The Salvation Army and other agencies and church groups all pitch in to help out our communities."
And if you give, it goes right back into the community.
"If you give in the Parkersburg or Wood County area we serve, all 100 percent stays in Wood County. As you give your dollars to The Salvation Army, 82 cents of every dollar goes back to the services that are provided here in our community in Parkersburg."
The Salvation Army in Marietta is gearing up for their bell ringing season. You'll be able to find donation spots at area stores the day after Thanksgiving.
