Scams Hitting Wood County Residents

Scams continue to pop up in Wood County and residents are losing out on lots of money.

The Wood County Sheriff's Office is urging people to be aware of scams hitting our area.

Sheriff Jeff Sandy says anytime someone asks for money and it seems too good to be true, that it probably is.

One scam ripping off Wood County residents involves people going door to door selling raffle tickets.

"An individual was selling raffle tickets to win a Mossberg Shotgun and the proceeds were supposed to go to the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department. They are not sanctioning the raffle off a Mossberg shotgun," says Sheriff Sandy.

One recent scam involves a company claiming to be a mystery shopper program.

A resident says she lost over a thousand dollars after she wire transferred money to what she thought was a reputable company. They sent her instructions to deposit checks and wire transfer money.

"The lady deposited checks. She wired transferred the money and then the checks were bogus. They were fraudulent and as a result the checks bounced. The money that she wire transferred she was obligated to pay that because these checks she has deposited."

Anyone who feels they may be a victim of a scam is encouraged to call the Wood County Sheriff's Office at 304-424-1945.
