UPDATE 1/22/2014 5:00 PM

Veterans and health care.

A West Virginia Senator and a Congresswoman who wants to be a Senator talked about that with people in Wood County.

Local veterans of conflicts ranging from Korea to Iraq discussed with Senator Manchin the red tape they've found in getting the care they need.

One mentioned promises made, but not kept.

Manchin expressed his concerns about a proposed one percent cost of living reduction to veterans.

He says that wouldn't be necessary is Congress found common ground on ways to reduce spending not by making cuts, but by making government more efficient.

"We have to make sure we aren't putting on the backs of our veterans and slashing because of our inability to have a tax system that's fair and brings in enough money to run this country," says Sen. Manchin. "We don't have to raise anybody's taxes; just close loopholes and offset some credits before we start cutting services."

One local veteran called the cuts a breach of promises made to veterans, who pledged to America to serve their country.

Senator Manchin also took time out to recognize a future veteran - a Parkersburg High School, John Bolton, student who was accepted into the Naval Academy.

The chemical spill in Charleston creates more conversation and brings a lawmaker to Wood County during a statewide tour.

Senator Joe Manchin says he will hold a tour to discuss common sense legislation to help prevent spills like this from happening again in the state.

It's called "Connecting With West Virginians".

On Wednesday the tour will bring Sen. Manchin to two stops in the area.

First a town hall meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the National Guard Armory in Williamstown with family and friends of veterans.

Then at 11:45 a.m. Sen. Manchin will be at the Burger King on Grand Central Avenue in Vienna to disucss franchise small business community.
