UPDATE 10/18/2013 8:15 PM

The big dip in the road wasn't your imagination. Getting off the westbound ramp of the Blennerhasset Bridge seemed hazardous.

Ohio Department of Transportation worked all day Friday on a gap in the road (or expanded joint, as they call it).

"Our crew was out as part of our maintenance operations doing road checks and noticed that a joint on the U.S. 50 ramp here was expanding more than usual,” says ODOT Public Information Officer David Rose.

So they're taking a step in the right direction.

"We’re having an issue with our longitudinal joint so we sawed out a 15-foot section by 10 inches deep," says Ryan Mayle, from ODOT District 10.

They're trying to get ahead of the game -- especially before winter hits.

"We’re doing the temporary fix, fill it in with asphalt and we're gonna get this road opened,” Rose says.

The joint expansion can be caused by a number of factors.

According to Rose, it could be temperature differences, “for example the curvature of this ramp, could mean that there may be some type of drainage issue we're not aware about; you know, I think this concrete pavement is about six years old.”

Part of it's just doing some inspecting.

"We’re gonna take the slab of concrete that we cut out back to the lab, do some more detailed testing on it and find out what the issue is, if any,” Rose says.

And figure out what the next step should be.

"Once our results come back from the lab, find out what we need to do to just fix the long-term fix."

The good news is they repaired the gap, at least for the short-term -- and the road reopened at 3:00 Friday afternoon.

UPDATE 10/18/2013 5:00 PM

The Route 50 westbound ramp off the Blennerhassett Bridge is undergoing repairs for an expanded joint the Ohio Department of Transportation discovered while doing routine maintenance and road checks.

ODOT Public Information Officer David Rose says the joint expansion can be caused by a number of factors so they're trying to get ahead of the game, especially before winter hits.

They cut a slab of the concrete and gave it a temporary fix.

"Could be temperature differences, could be for example the curvature of this ramp, could mean that there may be some type of drainage issue that we're just not aware about...you know, I think this concrete pavement is about six years old," Rose says.

He says part of it's just about inspecting.

They're going to take the concrete slab back to the lab, do more detailed testing on it and find out what the issue is.

The good news is they gave it short-term repair and the road reopened at 3:00 Friday.
