NORTH ELBA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities identified the three victims in a single-engine plane crash in the Adirondacks as a Vienna man, his 24-year-old daughter and a 25-year-old Michigan man.

State police tell local media 63-year-old Fred Kafka of Vienna, West Virginia was piloting the Mooney M20 when it crashed Saturday morning after attempting to land at the Lake Placid Municipal Airport in the town of North Elba.

Also killed were his daughter, Kathleen Kafka of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Reed Phillips of Midland, Michigan. Both were graduate students at Clarkson University in northern New York.

Police say Fred Kafka was thwarted from landing by a plane approaching from the opposite direction. While making another approach, his plane stalled and crashed into a field.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
