W.Va. Issues New Fish Consumption Advisories

If you love eating fish there's a new advisory from wildlife officials you need to hear.

The Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission recommends eating just six meals per year of the hybrid striped bass.

That's cut in-half, down from an advisory of 12 meals a year.

ORSANCO found higher levels of the chemical PCB in the Ohio River in Wood, Pleasants and Tyler Counties.

Experts say the chemical doesn't hurt the bass but it could hurt people who eat them.

"These fish can have these levels of PCB and mercury and go on living and reproducing just fine. And also at these levels there's no concern for direct consumption from people as far as drinking water, and swimming, and being in the water. The only concern here is for the direct consumption of the fish itself," says Jeff Thomas.

Ohio River advisories are based on data from ORSANCO.

The hybrid striped bass advisory is in effect for Wheeling area counties, south into the Mid-Ohio Valley, up to the Belleville lock, just north of the Jackson County line.
