It's going to be a long hot summer -- air conditioning is a luxury everyone should have.

Washington Morgan Community Action is ready to help those in need have a cool summer.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) starts July 1 with income eligible households that have members 60 or older.

They can receive a one-time payment on their current electric bill and/or an air conditioner worth up to $175.

“This program is very important for elderly people that have breathing problems or for that matter anyone that has a breathing issue, which a lot of people in the Mid-Ohio Valley seem to do,” says Mary Bayless, senior case manager. “When the humidity is up and they can't breathe, the air conditioning helps them to breathe. If they don't have an air conditioner and they need help with their electric, we can help keep the electric on so they can have a fan.”

HEAP has been in existence for 10 to 15 years and Bayless says people are really grateful to have it there.

She says they've been calling since May to find out when it begins and about getting an air conditioner or help with their bill.

Applications will be accepted at 218 Putnam Street, Marietta, Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and in Morgan County at 50 Third St., Malta, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

For more information, call 740-373-3745 and in Morgan County 740-962-3827.
