UPDATE 2/27/2014 2:00 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's May 13 primary slate is official and will have several contested races on the federal level.

Secretary of State Natalie Tennant certified the primary election's candidates earlier this month.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall in the 3rd District is the lone incumbent in Congress facing a primary opponent.

Second District Rep. Shelley Moore Capito will face two other candidates in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Jay Rockefeller, while Tennant is running on the Democratic side and will have two opponents.

Seven Republicans and two Democrats are seeking Capito's congressional seat. First District Republican Rep. David McKinley is running unopposed.

Half of the 34-member state Senate and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates are up this year.

UPDATE 1/14/2014 11:15 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Williamstown Democrat files to run for Jay Rockefeller's U.S. Senate seat.

David Wamsley filed with the West Virginia Secretary of State's office Monday for the retiring Rockefeller's seat.

In total, the first day that candidates could file for elective office in West Virginia drew one candidate for the U.S. Senate and four for the U.S. House.

Filing for the 3rd District U.S. House seat held by 19-term Democrat Nick Rahall are Republican Cabell County Sen. Evan Jenkins and retired Army officer Richard Ojeda II, a Democrat from Logan County.

Two Republicans filed for the 2nd District U.S. House seat: Alex Mooney of Jefferson County and Jim Moss of Putnam County. Incumbent Shelley Moore Capito plans to seek Rockefeller's U.S. Senate seat.

It's filing season for West Virginia's May primary.

But so far, only a couple of Wood County candidates have filed to run this year.

County clerk Mark Rhodes, who is running for an unexpired term, did so Monday.

So did Wood County Board of Education member Jim Fox.

There are a limited number of local offices coming up in this year's elections.

" Whoever files for county commission has to live in (magisterial) district C," says County Clerk Mark Rhodes. "The unexpired term for county clerk's office, the board of education has three seats available, and conservation district supervisor is on the ballot for this year."

The filing period runs through January 25.

Candidates for the West Virginia Legislature and Congress file to run for office at the secretary of state's office in Charleston.
