West Virginia lawmakers have passed a new act helping law enforcement officers track down a person's cellphone.
The House of Delegates voted 96-1 Monday afternoon passing the Kelsey Smith Act.
Several states considered this since the murder of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith from Kansas.
In 2007, cell phone signals helped lead police to Smith's body four days after she was abducted from a Target parking lot.
The bill would call on wireless carriers to provide information without requiring a judge's order.
"Well this is just an exception for which you would call an exigent circumstance where somebody's in danger of serious physical injury or even death to make sure that law enforcement is able to locate them," says Delegate John Ellem.
The Kelsey Smith Act will next head to the senate.
