It started a half-century ago with nothing in the bank.
But last year, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation handed out more than one and a half million dollars in grants.
Friday's annual foundation meeting was a celebration of the past 50 years.
It has recently turned some of its attention toward young people, with a civic leaders program aimed at helping them find local employment.
"Just as 50 years ago, a handful of people put together this foundation for the community's good," said Executive Director Judy Sjostedt, "we have an obligation to build on that foundation for the people who are here in 2063, when it celebrates its 100th anniversary."
Several retiring members of the foundation's board were honored for their service, including outgoing board chairman Fred Rader.
