Spence, Bernard "Red" William

Bernard "Red" William Spence 79, of Marietta, passed away Friday morning November 9, 2012, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born Thursday, May 11, 1933, in Lewisville, OH, to the late Homer W. and Sylvia Ullman Spence. He served in the U.S. Army from August 1953 to June of 1955 as a Supply Specialist. Red traveled extensively with his family and friends and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. He was a charter member of Marietta Beagle Club. His other interests were painting watercolor landscapes and sharing his memorized poems and stories. Red worked as a barber for sixteen years, owned a sewing center for two and a half years, then went back to Marietta College and graduated to become a teacher. He taught and coached basketball at Wolf Creek Schools for seventeen years.

Red was a member of the following organizations: American Legion Post #64, Washington County Retired Teachers Assoc., O.R.T.A.,Tunnel One-Room School Restoration, Tunnel Historical Assoc., Morgan County Ducks Unlimited, Blennerhassett Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Tunnel United Methodist Church, Goodfellows Park, and N.R.A.

He was a member of American Union #1 F.&A.M., Valley of Cambridge Scottish Rite, and York Rite Bodies of Marietta Chapter, Council and Commandery and a member of Aladdin Shrine of Columbus, OH.

Red is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Ruth Martin Spence, one son Todd W. Spence (Susan) of McConnelsville, OH, one daughter Tangie R. Rumbold (Ken) of Marietta, OH, and two grandchildren Kate Elizabeth Spence of Columbus, GA, and Abbey Elizabeth Rumbold of Pittsburgh, PA, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother James Lewis Spence, and a sister Virginia Mae Ashley.

Visitation will be held on Sunday November 11, 2012, at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 with American Union Lodge #1 conducting a Masonic Service at 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday November 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Tunnel United Methodist Church with full military rites.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tunnel One-Room School Restoration Project, in care of JoAnn Ingram, 500 Wynncrest Drive, Marietta, OH 45750.
