He was born May 3, 1923 in New Matamoras, to George Brady and Theora Scherber Doan. He had been a station manager for the Standard Oil Company for 36 years. He was a 1941 graduate of New Matamoras High School. Mr. Doan was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 733rd Railway Battalion, stationed in the European Theatre of Operations, being responsible for 20 drivers and 37 vehicles. He had received the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and the EAME THR Service Medal, with three Bronze Stars. He was a life member of both the American Legion, Post #64 and the VFW, Post #5108.
Mr. Doan is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Grubb Doan, whom he married on March 27, 1948, a daughter, Carol O’Grady of Marietta, son, Jeff Doan (Margaret) of Gainesville, FL, grandsons, Eric Doan (Anne) of Minneapolis, MS and Matt Doan of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, granddaughters, Betsy Wood (Dave) of West Columbia, WV and Darcie Porter (Chris) of Marietta, sister, Lila Hill, of Marietta, brother, Jim Doan (Wilma), of Daytona Beach, FL, sister in law, Margaret Grubb, of Marietta, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and son in law, John O’Grady.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell officiating. Friends may call for two hours prior to his service. Burial will be in New St. Mary’s Cemetery. Donations may be made to the St. Mary’s School Foundation, 506 Fourth St., Marietta, OH 45750.
