Michael J. McCarthy, 75, of Parkersburg died March 27, 2013 at the Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, OH. He was born August 9, 1937 in Baltimore, MD a son of the late Burton George and Elda Mae Porter McCarthy.
Mike worked for Kaiser Aluminum (now Pechiney) in Ravenswood, WV, for 40 years. He ended his career with several years as Quality Engineering Manager, responsible for assuring compliance with aerospace and military specifications. NASA awarded him a trip to the Space Center, with front row seats at a shuttle launch. Mike served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Europe and was instrumental in processing some of the 80,000 Hungarian refugees who emigrated to the U.S. after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution against the Soviet Union.
After retirement in 1997, Mike volunteered with FaithLink, providing rides
to homebound individuals. He also helped visitors to Camden Clark's large office building, driving a golf cart in the parkinparkng lot. Mike enjoyed annual visits to St. Petersburg, FL, and Ocean City, MD. He loved seafood, fishing, golf, and watching, reading and talking about politics.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor L. McCarthy; one daughter, Kelly (Jeff) Black of Pickerington, OH; two sons, Michael J. (JoAnn) McCarthy, Jr. of Worthington, OH, Allan K. Tear, II of Providence, RI; six grandchildren, Ryan, Jaymie, and Corey Black, Garrett McCarthy, Raji and Samu Tear; four brothers, Burton G. (Ruth) McCarthy, Gregory V. (Carol) McCarthy, Timothy C. (Helen) McCarthy and Thomas L. (Marlene) McCarthy; one sister, Patricia L. McCarthy.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother Kenneth J. McCarthy and one infant sister, Kathleen McCarthy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday 11:00 am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Monsignor Joseph Peterson and Father Andy Switzer as celebrants.
Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Leavitt Funeral Home,
Parkersburg, with a time of prayer and memory sharing at 3pm and 7pm.
