Daniel M. Willis Sr., 94, of Waverly, passed away April 18, 2013 at Camden Clark Medical Center Memorial Campus. He was born at Milton, WV a son of the late Daniel Milton and Mary May Hershman Willis.
Mr. Willis had retired from the Wood Co. Board of Education. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner on a B17 Bomber. He was the only survivor after being shot down over Germany, was classified M.I.A. and was a P.O.W. His family welcomed him home, but endured the hardship war put upon him. Mr. Willis was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., was Baptist by faith and was an accomplished artist. His artwork is displayed in various locations around Parkersburg.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary M. Jones, Regina Ann Sawyers, Debbie Joe Parker and Glada F. Scott; five sons, Daniel M. Willis Jr, Clyde M. Willis, Phillip L. Willis, Ricky L. Willis and Kenny A. Willis; one sister, Josie Janey. Mr. Willis was proud to be the patriarch of a five generation family with over one hundred grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Willis; one daughter Bonnie Jean Willis; one son, Wayne E. Willis; three granddaughters, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Monday at the Union Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Law officiating. Interment will follow in the Harper Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Color Guard. Friends may call at the Vaughan Funeral Home from 5-8 P.M. Sunday and one hour prior to services at the church.
