Herbert A. Darnell, 91, of Vienna, West Virginia, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Carehaven of Pleasants in Belmont, West Virginia.
He was born May 27, 1921 in Bearsville, Tyler County, West Virginia, a son of the late J. Albert and Ota Edna Hamilton Darnell.
Herbert was a member of the State Soil Conservation Committee through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and held the responsibility of maintenance for their fleet of heavy equipment. He left home with a backpack and his lifesavings of $6.00, to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. Herbert served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and walked and rode from Omaha Beach to Berlin and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Vienna Baptist Church, Vienna Masonic Lodge #172, American Legion Post 15, and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene Staats Darnell; one son, David A. Darnell of Beckley; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Darnell (Mathew Allen Johnson) and her daughter, Nicole Lynn Jonhson all of Beckley; two step-daughters, Diana Sue Jackson (Mike) of Williamstown, WV and Cheri L. Gressel (Mike) of Vermillion, OH; one step-son, Jeffrey Thomas Foster (Kristi) of Cortland, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Robert Bush, Josh Jackson, Whitney Foster, Stacy Bush, Kyla Foster and Zane Foster.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his first wife in 1982, Margaret Gainer Darnell and one sister.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Fairview Cemetery in Tyler County, West Virginia with Pastor Bill Brown officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg, West Virginia.
