Jean LaRose Young, 87, of Parkersburg, passed away on April 28, 2013 at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.




She was born August 3, 1925 in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Jay Donley and Sarah Henrietta Tefft.




Jean graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1942 and served her country in the US Nurse Cadet Corps at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC.




Jean has devoted her life to her children, education and her career in nursing and health. She taught nursing at Wet Virginia University in Morgantown, WV in 1955-56 while attending classes there. She also taught at the CCMH School of Nursing from 1964-1969 and served as class sponsor for the school's last graduating class from 1966-1969.




In 1968, Mrs. Young started and served as the Director of the Department of Public Relations at CCMH, while continuing to teach in the Staff Development Department. She initiated several programs at CCMH during her years of service, many of which continue to be carried out today. She introduced the first News 'N Notes in 1966 and Patient Magazine in 1988, started New Employee Orientation, Employee Service Awards, Personnel Policies and Benefits for Employees, including social events, Christmas parties and summer picnics. Additionally, Mrs. Young developed and presented the Associate Chaplin Program, the Public Relations Intern Program (associated with West Virginia University and Marshall University), the CCMH Mr. YUK Program, the P.O.P. Program - Pre-Hospital Orientation Program, the Hospital Tour Program, History Procurement and many others.




Active in the Parkersburg community, Mrs. Young has worked with the American Cancer Society, Hospice, the American Heart Association, the Parkinson's Disease Support Group, American Red Cross, March of Dimes and many others. She had served on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society, served as a docent for the Blennerhassett Island tours, served as a consultant on history for CCMH and did quite a bit of traveling.




Jean was active with the Friends of Blennerhassett for twenty five years. She was a member of the Historical Preservation Society, Life Time Member of the Camden Clark Auxiliary, and member of the Camden Clark Nurses Alumni and was honorary president of the Lakeview Social Club.




Surviving are her daughter Sara Ann Young of Parkersburg, two grandchildren, Kathryn Stoutenger and John of Vienna, VA, Emily C.Mills and Jeffery of Dunwoody, GA, four great grandchildren Jack, Andrew, Harrison, Walker Scott, brothers James D. Ankrom and Rose of Washington, George E. Ankrom and Ruth of Vincent, OH, and sister Irma Donna Hudgins of Walker.




In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband Jack Henry Young, son Michael Harris Young, sister Claire Doris Conley and brother Jack W. Ankrom.




The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Rev. Damon Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen South Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 on Saturday and for one hour prior to the service on Sunday.




Memorials may be made in Jean's memory to the Camden Clark Foundation through the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.
