Funeral Home: Leavitt Funeral Home
Dixie Matheney Conley, 74, passed in to God's mighty arms Thursday December 5, 2013 at Muskingham Nursing and Rehab in Beverly. She was born in Cabin Creek, WV a daughter of the late Joseph and Reba (Neal) Matheney.
Dixie eventually ended up in St. Albans, where she attended SAHS and was Class Officer her junior and senior years. She was also a majorette and voted Homecoming Queen "Miss Red Dragon". She was active in many clubs and sororities. She attended Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital Nursing School, where she graduated as a medical technologist. She worked in the lab at H.J. Thomas Hospital several years.
A little later in life Dixie met Jim Conley. They married and moved their
family of four children to Vienna, WV. Dixie enjoyed golf very much and
played many rounds at Oxbow Golf Course (weather be damned) with her friend Helen Holdridge. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and homemaking. She later earned her GRS in Real Estate and was Relocation Director at 2 firms. A move to North Carolina seemed an excellent opportunity for Jim and Dixie, but it was not to be as Dixie suffered a debilitating stroke in 1992. She
has valiantly lived with its marks for over 21 years.
Dixie is survived by her loving husband Jim of Belpre, OH; sons Yale Conley, MD and Vince Conley of Vienna, WV, and Steven Wade of San Jose, CA; daughter Dawn Wade Randle of Grover, NC; two siblings, Judy O'Brien of North Brook, IL, James E. Matheney of St. Albans, WV; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Dixie has been such an inspiration to those seeing her battle the damages of stroke.
In lie of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warriors or Salvation Army.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday December 14, 2014 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at the Leavitt Family Center.
