Joseph M. “Joe” Cottrell, 73, of Newton, died at 5:50 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014 in the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center, Clarksburg, after an extended illness.

He was born April 27, 1941, at Oka, Calhoun County, a son of the late Maxwell Dell and Imogene Lloyd Cottrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Lloyd, Clifton and Gerald Cottrell; one sister, Sandra King.

Joe was a retired employee of Gaylord Industries, Marion, OH. He was a member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association and NRA. Also, he was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jackie and Nancy Cottrell of Newton and Mackie and Patricia Cottrell of Mogadore, OH; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Jerry Patchin of Hartville, OH and Elizabeth and Cary Ehrenfeld of Pittsburgh, PA; additional sisters-in-law, Nancy Cottrell of Atwater, OH and Edith Cottrell of Wheeling; numerous nieces and nephews.

He has been cremated. There will be no visitation or service. He will be buried in the Cottrell Cemetery, Oka.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.

John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, is in charge of arrangements.
