WV Boys Class AA Quarterfinals

Ravenswood Rocks Keyser

(AP) -- Dusty Mullins scored 24 points and top-seeded Ravenswood never trailed in beating no. 8 Keyser 78-57 in the WV boys Class AA quarterfinals wednesday night.

Ravenswood (24-1), looking for its second title in three years, still had trouble with Keyser, just as the Red Devils did in beating the Golden Tornado by just three points in the 2006 quarterfinals.

A Wes Washington layup pulled Keyser within 44-40 early in the third quarter, but the Golden Tornado (13-11) went scoreless over a three-minute stretch and Ravenswood started pulling away.

Mullins scored 10 points in the first three minutes of the fourth to put Ravenswood ahead 67-50.

Klavs Bogdanovics added 17 points and Ben Wise scored 14 for Ravenswood.

Bluefield Blisters Oak Hill

(AP) -- Craig Ponder scored 20 points to lead Bluefield to a 67-45 win over Oak Hill in the WV boys Class AA quarterfinals Wednesday night.

Fourth-seeded Bluefield (21-4) beat No. 5 Oak Hill (16-9) for the third time this season. The Beavers will meet top-seeded Ravenswood in the semifinals on Friday.

Bluefield led 18-12 at halftime. Ponder hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter and Bluefield surged ahead 42-29.

Oak Hill pulled as close as 49-40 in the fourth following a Chris Lawson layup with 4:17 left but got no closer. Lawson finished with 19 points.

Ansel Ponder added 16 points and Turquan Casey had 14 for Bluefield.

Wyoming East Tops Grafton

(AP) -- Cory Willard scored 23 points, Gentry Shrewsbury had 21 points and 18 rebounds, and defending champion Wyoming East beat Grafton 70-58 in the WV boys Class AA quarterfinals Wednesday.

No. 2 Wyoming East advances to Friday's semifinals to meet no. 3 Logan in a rematch of last year's championship game.

Wyoming East (22-3) never trailed and went on a 20-6 run to start the third quarter. Adam Repass' basket with 1:58 left in the third gave the Warriors their largest lead, 60-42.

No. 7 Grafton answered with a 14-2 run, including eight points by C.T. Johns. His 3-pointer cut the deficit to 62-56 with 4:31 left. But Grafton got no closer. Johns led Grafton (14-11) With 16 points.

Logan Powers Past Weir

(AP) -- Jonathan Bevins scored 23 points and Logan used a 25-0 run over the final nine minutes to beat Weir 66-46 in the WV boys Class AA quarterfinals.

Sixth-seeded Weir (15-10) scored 22 points in the first quarter, led by as many as 11 before halftime but scored just 24 points over the final three periods.

Third-seeded Logan (23-3) trailed 46-41 with a minute left in the third before taking command. Two Brett Sorrell 3-pointers early in the fourth put Logan ahead to stay, 48-46.

Jacob Long added 14 points for Logan and Sorrell finished with 13.

Shawn Burns led Weir with 14 points and Pete Brogdon scored 12. The Red Riders didn't attempt a free throw in the second half.

WV Boys Class AAA Quarterfinals

South Charleston Ends Huntington's Reign

(AP) -- Pierria Henry had 22 points and 11 rebounds as top-seeded South Charleston cruised past no. 8 seed Huntington 75-63 in the WV boys Class AAA quarterfinals Wednesday night.

In a rematch of the 2007 finals where Huntington won by 42 points, South Charleston (23-1) never trailed in the contest to end the Highlanders' three-year reign as state champions.

Late in the third quarter, South Charleston went scoreless over a four-minute stretch, while Lambros Svingos' layup brought Huntington within 48-42. But the Highlanders got no closer.

Henry scored the first six points in the fourth to put South Charleston ahead 59-46.

J.J. Martin had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Huntington (12-13). Svingos had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyler Harris added 13 points for South Charleston.

Capital Clips Preston

(AP) -- Rio Berkley scored 16 points to lead Capital to a 52-35 win over Preston in the WV boys Class AAA quarterfinals Wednesday.

Last year Capital was ousted in the quarterfinals by another North Central Athletic Conference member, Morgantown. The second-seeded Cougars had no such trouble this time.

Berkley's 3-pointer put Capital ahead to stay, 11-10, with six minutes left until halftime.

Capital (21-4) Led 31-26 before scoring nine straight points midway through the fourth quarter to take a double-digit lead for good.

T.J. Thompson led no. 7 Preston (18-7) With 10 points. Preston's 35 points tied for its lowest total of the season.
