Skyline Speedway Results

STEWART, OHIO-Grayson, Kentucky's Josh McGuire blitzed the field in the 'Thunder Forty' for AMRA Late Models Friday night at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway. Grove City, Ohio driver Cole Duncan won the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association 410 sprint main, while Jeremy Blake claimed the AMRA modifieds, Barry Brisker took the Pure Stocks, and Tommy Adkins claimed the Four Cylinders. 119 cars flooded the pits for the sizzling night of competition, while one of the largest Skyline crowds in years came out for the evening's festivities.

The 'Thunder Forty' Late Model Invitational for AMRA Late Models saw Grayson, KY driver Josh McGuire claim the $2,000 paycheck over another hard-charger, Chris Garnes of Evans, WV. The 40-lap affair had just one caution, a lap-20 ride into the uke tires by young Nick Dohm as McGuire dominated all stages of the event.

While McGuire, Garnes, Carpenter, and Jeff Burdette battled it out early, K.C. Burdette and Larry Bond were pushing hard through the field. Burdette came from 12th to third at the finish, while Bond, the hard charger, blasted from 14th to fourth and a dramatic Bond-like effort. But early on Garnes, Carpenter, Jeff Burdette, and Freddie Carpenter plundered for position.

McGuire was straight and fast on the 3/8 mile bullring that took rubber as the race progressed, tightening up the chassis on many of the competitors. Thus, several grooves developed on the rubber clad surface. McGuire adjusted best in leading flag to flag for his 9th Skyline feature win.
South Parkersburg driver Chris Carpenter, last week's winner, was a strong fourth ahead of Dad 'Fast Freddie Carpeter, Jeff Burdette, Cory Conley, Tony Roush, and Dan Morrison.

McGuire said, "It's a new car and I knew this was the place to shake it down. I love Skyline and ole C.J. knows best (of his C.J. Rayburn Chassis). The car was great all through the race."

"I needed a win. Now, I can eat Peanut Butter and Jelly instead of crackers," the veteran laughed.

Youngster Cole Duncan, Grove City, Ohio drove like a veteran in claiming the second-ever OVSCA 25-lap feature over last week's winner Danny Smith. By the halfway mark, Duncan had run into lapped traffic, where he did a superb job of distancing himself from the field.

On lap 16, veteran Greg Mitchell clipped the turn three tires and did a few endo's before landing upright. The caution bunched up the field, putting lapped cars to the end of the pack for a 9-lap shoot-out to the finish. Josh Davis, OVSCA frontrunner, got a great jump and challenged Smith for second, perhaps giving Duncan the break he needed to outrun Smith to the checkered.

In the last half of race fourth place Aaron Higgins advanced five spots as did teammate Jimmy Stinson, putting two Billy Jarrell cars in the top five. Higgins edged Davis out for third, while Kory Crabtree, Andre Layfield, and Sam Ashworth all put on a great show to finish in the top ten. Behind winning Duncan were Smith, Higgins, Davis, Stinson, Crabtree, Layfield, Ashworth and a hard charging Brian Benson. Higgins made it his second week in a row on leave from his NASCAR Modified stint in California.

Duncan, the Grove City High School senior said, "It's our first win of the season. We like what the series (OVSCA) is doing, but we are going to also hit some other big races across the area. Tonight, I knew if I could hit my spots and hold my line on the bottom, I would be ok. I tried to save the tires under the yellow, and have some rubber under me at the end. I think that made the difference."

Jeremy Blake, Guysville, Ohio, calls it a "soft right foot", but his driving ability is equally impressive as Blake battled last week's winner Rick Venham, Jr. of Marietta. Blake survived several yellows in claiming the 20-lap Malta AMRA modified main event.

Blake stretched it out over second place Venham late in the race as Mike McPherson and Virginia driver Russell Erwin diced it out for position. Garnes began to close the gap on Venham, but Blake had nothing but clear sailing out in front of the pack at the end.

Jeremy Blake roared on for the win while Venham, Robert Garnes, Mike McPherson, Russell Erwin, Cliff Crank, Thomas Sigler, Dusty Boley, Jeremy Roush, and Jeremy Berwanger rounded out the top ten.

Barry Brisker went from "Zero" to "Hero" in a hurry. Brisker looped it on the first lap and went to the tail of the 19 car field. With two laps to go, Brisker took over leader Jeff Fornash and Rick VanDyne followed in tow. Briskers hard-charger award stemmed from his run from last to first, sparking announcer Bruce Hines to cite Brisker's bottom run as a "bottom feeder on steroids."

Prior to the race-winning pass, Fornash had anchored the lead with Brisker and VanDyne battling sometimes 3-wide. Another top runner, Ryan Wilson the season opening winner exited with a flat tire. Brisker made the pass and went on to the 15-lap win over VanDyne, Jeff Fornash, Jeremy Blake, Levi Woods, Shane Roush, Gary Gould, George Klintworth, Kenny Lilly, and Richard Wilson.

In the Four Cylinder main Portland's Tommy Adkins made it two-for-two over Chris Lauer, renewing a rivalry from year's past. Both drivers, at the top of their games, continue to put on a show while Tyler Emmelhainz, Adkins' cousin (Racing legend Gene Adkins' grandson), anchored a strong third. At the finish they came across the line in that order ahead of George Klintworth and Donnie Bartlett.

Jeff Rankins early success resulted in a citation to the tail, where he ran out of time to recover for a top ten. Rounding out the top ten were Adkins, Lauer, Emmelhainz, George Klintworth, Donnie Bartlett, Brandon Bowling, Terry Gilkey, Keith Marlow, Jonathan Arnold, and Dean Wingrove.

Skyline will have an $800 to win Pure Stock Invitational and Mother's Day Festivities next Friday May 7, where the Speedway will honor cancer survivors as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night. May 14 will be a Tribute to Gene Adkins and a Four Cylinder $600 to win Invitational. All out of town drivers, especially next week's Pure Stock Invitation particpants are asked to review the rules before participation.
