Skyline Speedway Results

The red-clay at Skyline Speedway was sticky fast thanks to a 4 p.m. downpour that left the pits a quagmire, but the racing surface smooth and nothing less-than spectacular. Against all odds, Billy Jarrell and crew prepped the track to perfection as a stage for the golden runs of Greg Wilson, Benton Ridge, OH in the 410 OVSCA sprint cars and Chris Garnes, Evans, WV in the AMRA Late Models. Also posting wins were Kenny Johnson, Mineral Wells (win #5 at Skyline), Ryan Wilson, Marietta (win #9), Tommy Adkins (win #8), and Will Holland respectively in the AMRA Modifieds, Pure Stocks, 4-Cylinders, and Mini-Wedges.

Andrea Layfield and Aaron Higgins set the stage for the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association/Hoosier Tire A-main. Layfield led a round before Higgins took over the next circuit. On the second circuit Eddie Miller bicycled and left the track at a high rate of speed, backing into a retaining wall in the pit area. Miller was shaken from the hard hit, but otherwise ok.

Higgins and Layfield battled furiously on the record-fast track. Cars were clocked consistently in the ten-second range throughout the pack as even the slightest mistake could turn to disaster. Great driving, however, kept accidents to a minimum. Higgins got in a skirmish with lapped traffic on the 12th circuit, handing the lead to Greg Wilson. Wilson's next feat was to hold off the charges of a laser fast Jimmy Stinson--the race hard charger, up from 16th to second. Dallas Hewitt has his best run of the 410 season along with an outstanding effort from young Sam Ashworth and Josh Davis.

Another great show was put on by the OVSCA. Rounding out the top ten were Wilson, Stinson, Dallas Hewitt, Sam Ashworth, Josh Davis, Aaron HIggins, Dave Dickson, Chris Myers, Tim Mosher, Freddie Staats, Kory Crabtree, and Sam Mosher.

Ronnie Mayle led the first five circuits of a 25-lap spine-tingling, high speed grind in the AMRA Late Models. Early accidents claimed the cars of Scott Wolfe and Roy Roush. Dan Morrison took over the point from the 6th lap to lap 14 was Garnes worked ferociously on the veteran Newport driver.

Garnes finally made his move on lap 15 and soared to the win over Larry Bond who had a great run. Justin Powell was hard-charger in a 18th to 9th place run. Rounding out the top ten were Garnes, Larry Bond, Jeff Burdette, Andy Bond, Ronnie Mayle, Travis Brookover, Tony Roush, Dan Morrison, Justin Powell, and JR Crum. J.R. Crum had his best night of the year with a super run into the top ten.

In the AMRA Modifieds, National Points' leader Kenny Johnson squeezed every ounce of fast out of his Two Brothers/Shaw Chassis and the effort resulted in a big win over runner-up Mike McPherson. McPherson was lying in wait, but the chance never came.

Behind Johnson were McPherson, Jeremy Blake, Robert Garnes, J.P. Roberts, Vince Conrad, Kurt Stacy, Don Maloney, Cliff Crank, and Robin Ours.

Ryan Wilson overcame Curt Reck and George Klintworth to win his 9th Pure Stock main. At the finish it was Wilson, George Klintworth, Rick Vandyne, Gary Gould, Shane Roush, Curt Reck, and Jerrad Willis.

Tommy Adkins claimed his 8th 4cyl main by a nose as cousin Eugene Grumpy Adkins blitzed the winner every inch of the 15-lap event only to settle for a close second. Behind the two Adkins' were Jeff Rankin, Chris Lauer, George Klintworth, Scott Neal, Keith Young, Barry Kitts, Phil Eagle, John Rankin, and Terry Gilkey. Jeff Rankin had a solid night a won a race-long fight with Lauer for third.

Will Holland won the Mini-Wedge main.
Friday night July 16, the drivers of the illustrious ARCA Truck series will square off at the Skyline Speedway dirt bullring, a 3/8 mile clay oval nestled in the hills of Southeastern Ohio for the "Tailgate Rumble". This first-time ever event is one of the biggest attractions in the Tri-State. Joining the ARCA trucks are the AMRA Late Model Series, the AMRA Modifieds, and Mini-wedges.

Skyline Speedway continues action next Friday night. For further information visit << www.skylinespeedway.net >> or call 304-539-4410 or the track phone at 740-662-4111.
