Tim Phillips dream of swimming the 100 meter Butterfly at the London Summer Olympics will not be realized

Tim finished sixth in the finals at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha..

The race was won by Olympic legend Michael Phelps, with Tyler McGill finishing second to earn the other qualifying spot.

Tim had the lead at the halfway point, but he was overtaken down the stretch.

He's proved himself to be among the elite swimmers in the world, and has represented the Mid Ohio Valley with distinction.

Tim Phillips is right where he wants to be...1 race away from the Summer Olympic Games in London

Saturday night at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Tim was one of the 8 swimmers advancing to the finals of the 100 meter Butterfly.

Tim was the 5th fastest swimmer in the 2 semifinal heats.
His time came to 52.17 seconds

That was .82 seconds behind the time of Olympic legend Michael Phelps. Phelps, who is the defending Olympic champion in the event, had the fastest time of the night at 51.35.

Phillips, Phelps, and the rest of the field will compete in the 100 Butterfly Finals tomorrow evening. The top 2 finishers in the finals advance to the London Olympics.

Tim Phillips has passed his first test in the 100 meter Butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha Nebraska.

The Parkersburg High graduate has advanced to tonight's semifinals in the event.

Tim had the 4th fastest time in the field of 123 competitors. That makes him 1 of 16 swimmers advancing to this evening's semifinals.

His time came to 52.14 seconds. That put him .34 of a second behind Tim Phelps, the fastest qualifier and the record holder in the event.

This evening there will be two 8 swimmer semifinal heats. The 8 fastest qualifiers will advance to Sunday's finals. Then the top 2 finishers in that race qualify for the next month's Olympic games in London.

Tim Phillips faced his first competition Thursday in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha Nebraska:

The former Parkersburg High swimmer turned in a time of 50.87 in the preliminaries of the !00 Free Style.

The effort placed him 59th in a field of 111 swimmers.
The 16 fastest swimmers advance to this evening's semifinals.

Tim told WTAP that he was using the 100 Free as part of his practice regimen to prepare him for his best event: The 100 Butterfly. That event gets underway Saturday and a champion will be crowned on Sunday

Former Parkersburg High School championship swimmer Tim Phillips is in Omaha Nebraska for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

Tim will be competing Thursday in the 100 meter Free Style.

His best event is the 100 meter Butterfly. The preliminaries are set for Saturday, and the Finals are on Sunday.

Tim is trying to become the Mid Ohio Valley's first Olympian since Marietta's Betsy Mitchell back in the 1984.
