On Sunday afternoon, the West
Virginia wrestling team will face one of its toughest tests of the
season, as it travels to State College, Pa., for a dual meet against
defending national champion, No. 3 Penn State at 2 p.m.
?We are certainly very excited to have the opportunity to have a dual
meet against Penn State,? says coach Craig Turnbull. ?This is the
marquee matchup on our schedule, and we will wrestle in front of sold
out crowd at Rec Hall. This is a great opportunity for our guys to
wrestle some of the best wrestlers in the country.?
The team?s dual meet against the Nittany Lions will be their first dual
meet action since Nov. 6, when it posted shutouts against Johns Hopkins
and Franklin & Marshall at the University of Maryland Duals.
WVU?s shutouts were its first since Feb. 19 of last season, and its 48
points against Johns Hopkins were its most since 2009.
In their last meet against Penn State at last season?s Sprawl & Brawl
on Nov. 22, the Mountaineers were defeated by the Nittany Lions, 40-3.
Redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi scored the lone victory for WVU, as
he was on the winning end of a 10-5 decision over Penn State?s Bryan
The Mountaineers will head into Sunday?s matchup with five ranked
wrestlers, while the Nittany Lions will have a total of eight wrestlers
ranked, including three that hold their weight class?s No. 1 spot.
"I expect all these experiences to stretch us and help us get where we
want to be at," Turnbull says. ?The one thing they can control is
effort. I expect a great effort, and I expect them to step on the mat
with an intention to battle to win.?
