Although it's the number one killer in men and women, males still have a greater risk of heart attacks than females.

And they tend to have them at an earlier age.

Heredity plays a big part and knowing your family history can make a big difference and Father's Day is a good reminder for many men to get their checkups.

Here's Chuck Roberts with today's Health Minute.

"I love this picture. I love this.
Isn't that cool?
We look so different."

Behrouz Pirouz has much to celebrate this father's day.

"I have two beautiful daughters and wife and they are the purpose of my life."

Last year at age fifty-seven, Pirouz was diagnosed with coronary heart disease like his father and brother.

"One of the challenging things about coronary heart disease is that in the way it presents itself is fairly unpredictable."

After Pirouz felt mild chest pain- doctors found three spots in one of his arteries that were each eighty percent blocked.

They inserted stents to open up the areas.

Pirouz says he may not have lived to see father's day, had his family doctor not pushed for further tests after initial tests came back normal.

"He told me that for me, he has to be more aggressive because of my family history."

Knowing and understanding that risk factor is critical.

"It is reason to have a discussion with a primary care provider or specialist in terms of the need to implement prevention and screening."

Today, Pirouz has undergone cardic rehabilitation and is doing well.

"Every day since we saw him in the hospital kind of made everyday more special with him. We will see you in six months."

For Today's Health Minute, I'm Chuck Roberts.
