A normal resting heart rate for healthy adults is between 60 - 100 beats per minute.
Now a new study of heart patients finds that heart rate may be an indicator of life expectancy.

In people with stable heart disease, how fast the heart beats at rest may predict their risk of dying, according to new research being presented this week at a heart conference in Canada.
A higher resting heart rate increases the chances of not only dying from heart trouble but from other health problems as well, according to the researchers.
They looked at data from 2 international trials with over 30,000 heart patients. They found that adults who had heart rates greater then 78 beats per minute had an almost a 40 percent increased risk of cardiovascular problems than patients who had heart rates of 58 bests or less per minute. Those with higher rates were also about 75 percent more likely to die from heart trouble then those whose hearts beat more slowly.
Experts know that generally, the more fit you are, the slower your resting heart rate. So what can heart patients and healthy folks alike do to keep our hearts functioning at peak capacity?
The best advice is to get out and exercise, eat a healthy diet, manage your stress levels, limit caffeine and don't smoke.
